Love Ladder

Climb the ladder of love.

Love Ladder is a cozy logic puzzle built on the classic ladder game. Animal couples have been split up: one row of animals waits at the top of a ladder grid and their partners wait at the bottom. Each animal slides straight down and follows every connection it meets on the way.

Stage 38 with four couples. A cross piece is being dragged into one of the three plus slots; a single bar waits in the tray.

Game overview

What is Love Ladder?

You get a handful of pieces - single and double bars, diagonal slides and a cross that swaps two paths - and your job is to place them so that every animal lands on its own partner. Almost every stage has exactly one correct arrangement. With two to five couples across 1,000 stages, the paths get properly twisty.

At a glance

  1. Check which partner each animal needs to reach at the bottom.
  2. Drag the given pieces from the tray onto the ladder grid.
  3. Each animal slides down and turns wherever a piece links its line to another one.
  4. When every animal reaches its match, the stage is clear.

The rules, step by step

If you have ever drawn lots with a ladder on paper, you already know half of this game. Each animal starts at the top of its own vertical line and walks straight down. Whenever it meets a connection to the next line, it has to take it, and then it carries on downward. Where it ends up depends entirely on the connections along the way.

In Love Ladder the lines are already drawn, and the gaps between neighbouring lines have a few empty slots marked with a plus sign. Down in the tray you get exactly as many pieces as there are slots. Your job is to decide which piece goes in which slot so that every animal on top arrives at its own partner at the bottom. Each animal on top is looking for the partner of the same kind waiting at the bottom, the one wearing a pink bow: the Shiba Inu for the Shiba Inu, the grey kitten for the grey kitten, and so on.

When the last slot is filled, a GO button appears. Press it and the animals slide down one after another. If everyone meets their match, hearts pop and the stage is clear. If even one couple misses, you simply tap to try again and move the pieces around.

After pressing GO, each animal follows the ladder down. Two couples have already met at the bottom.

The five pieces

All pieces sit in the space between two neighbouring lines. On its own, almost every piece swaps the two animals on either side of it. The interesting part is what happens when several pieces share a ladder.

Single bar

one rung across the middle of the slot. The animal crosses to the next line and keeps going down.

Double bar

two rungs, one higher and one lower. An animal crosses over and then comes straight back, so a double bar placed by itself changes nothing. It becomes useful next to other pieces, because its rungs sit at different heights.

Diagonal up

a slanted slide. Coming from the left, the animal is carried up to a higher point on the right line; coming from the right, it slides down.

Diagonal down

the same idea, slanted the other way.

Cross

two slides that cross each other. It swaps the paths and also moves the animal to a different height, which changes which rung it meets next.

Some pairs cannot sit side by side on the same row: two single bars, two double bars, two crosses, or a diagonal up right next to a diagonal down. If you try, the game tells you the ladders would overlap and keeps the piece in your hand.

Controls

Drag a piece from the tray and drop it on a plus slot.

Drag a placed piece off the ladder to send it back to the tray.

Drop a piece onto a slot that is already filled and the two pieces trade places.

Press GO once every slot is filled to watch the result.

Stages 1 and 2 walk you through the basics, and the Guide in the settings menu shows what each piece does.

Stages and collections

There are 1,000 stages, played in order. The first few have two or three couples and only a slot or two. Four couples arrive early, and the large majority of the game, more than 800 stages, uses five couples with five or more pieces at once. After stage 1,000 the game keeps going with randomly picked stages. Nearly every stage has exactly one correct arrangement; a handful allow two.

Each clear earns coins, and clearing several stages in a row builds a streak that adds a bonus on top. Coins buy hints and three extra animal packs. The game starts with the Popular Pets pack (Shiba Inu, Pug, Shih Tzu and friends), and the Novel Pets pack with rabbits, hamsters and hedgehogs, Dog Friends and Cat Friends can each be unlocked for 500 coins. Packs change the animals on the ladder, not the puzzles.

Tips for your first stages

1Start from the bottom.

Look at where each animal needs to end up, then work out which neighbouring animals must trade places. Every swap you need is a clue to where a piece goes.

2Count the swaps.

A single bar, a diagonal or a cross each swaps two neighbours. If an animal is three lines away from its partner, it needs to cross three gaps somewhere.

3Save the double bar for last.

On its own it does nothing. Place the other pieces first, then use the double bar where its two rungs reorder animals that pass by at different heights.

4Mind the height.

When two pieces share a row, the one whose crossing point is higher is met first. Swapping two pieces on the same row can completely change the result.

5Use GO as an experiment.

There is no penalty for a wrong attempt. Watching where the animals go wrong is often the fastest way to see which slot needs a different piece.

Frequently asked questions

Is Love Ladder free?

Yes. You can play it in your browser on this page, or download it free from the App Store and Google Play. The mobile apps show ads after some stages and offer optional coin packs.

How do hints work?

A hint puts the correct piece into one empty or wrong slot and locks it in grey. In the apps you can watch an ad for one free hint or buy hint bundles with coins.
