Game overview

What is Zoo Blocku?

Raise your best score to unlock 20 zoo animals that dress up every block on the board, and the animal you use adds a bonus when the game ends. Single mode has no timer and lets you undo your last move by watching an ad. When you want something livelier, Time Attack starts you with 60 seconds and adds time for every clear.

At a glance

  1. Drag a block onto the 9x9 board.
  2. Fill a row, a column or a 3x3 square to clear it.
  3. In Single mode, place all three blocks to receive a new set.
  4. The game ends when none of your blocks fits anywhere, or in Time Attack when time runs out.

How a game works

Zoo Blocku takes the board of a sudoku, nine by nine with nine 3x3 boxes, and leaves the numbers out. Instead you get three blocks at a time in the tray below the board. Drag them onto the board and fill a whole row, a whole column or one of the 3x3 boxes to clear it. Blocks cannot be rotated, so a piece goes down exactly as you see it.

In Single mode there is no clock. You have to place all three blocks before the next three appear, and the game is over when none of the blocks in your tray fits anywhere. The board turns grey for a moment so you can see where it went wrong. Once per game, just before that happens, you are offered One More Chance: watch an ad and you get three fresh blocks.

The blocks change as you score. Under 300 points you only see four-cell shapes, which keeps the opening simple. From 300 points two and three cell pieces join in, from 900 points single cells and five-cell pieces appear, and at 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 points the set grows again until there are 85 different shapes in play.

Scoring

Every block you place scores one point per cell.

Each row or column you clear adds 15 points, and each 3x3 box adds 18.

Clearing several at once adds a BRAVO bonus that grows quickly: two at once is worth 10 extra, three at once 40, four at once 90.

Clearing on back to back moves builds a COMBO, and the bonus grows with the square of the combo. Place a block without clearing anything and the combo resets.

Time Attack and undo

The home screen has two modes. Time Attack starts you with 60 seconds. Each row, column or box you clear adds two seconds, and clearing several at once or keeping a combo going adds more. The tray works differently too: as soon as you use a block, its slot refills, and the pieces are drawn from the easier shapes. If nothing in the tray fits, you get three new blocks for free, and the game only ends when the clock reaches zero or the new blocks do not fit either.

Single mode has an undo button, the little time machine at the top. It takes back your last move, board, blocks and score together, after you watch a short ad. You can use it again after your next move, but only one step at a time. Single mode also saves itself, so if you leave in the middle of a game you can pick it up again from the home screen.

Zoo animals

There are 20 animals to collect, from a chick, a fox and a crocodile to a koala, an owl, an elephant and a bee. They are skins for the whole board: apply one and every block turns into that animal's face. New animals unlock as your best score in Single mode climbs, at 300 points for the fox, then 500, 800, 1,200 and onward up to 15,000 points.

Each animal also carries an end of game bonus that is added to your score when a game finishes. The chick gives nothing, the fox gives 10 points, and the bonus keeps rising all the way to 1,810 points for the bee. The bonus comes from the animal you have applied at the time, so after a new unlock it is worth switching to it.

The fox unlocks at 300 points in the middle of a game. Choose Apply to switch the board to fox blocks right away.

The Collection: the chick and the fox are unlocked, the fox is in use with a 10 point bonus, and the next animals open at 500, 800 and 1,200 points.

Tips for your first games

1Keep the middle open.

A large empty area in the center can take any shape the game hands you. Fill the edges and corners first, and leave room for the five-cell pieces that start showing up at 900 points.

2Think about all three blocks.

In Single mode you must place all three before you get new ones. Before you drop the first, check that the other two will still have somewhere to go.

3Aim for two clears at once.

Filling a row and a box with the same block is worth far more than two separate clears, and that BRAVO bonus is where big scores come from.

4Do not break the combo for nothing.

If a move can clear something, it usually beats a neat but empty placement, because the combo bonus resets the moment you place a block without clearing.

5Switch animals after an unlock.

Your end of game bonus comes from the animal you are using. When a new one unlocks, choose Apply so the next game counts the bigger bonus.
